Intermediate Thoracic Medical-Surgical Unit - C4-1

C4-1 is a 19-bed adult Thoracic Medical-Surgical Intermediate Care Unit.  Clinical Nurses on C4-1 provide expert care for acutely ill patients who have a diverse range of medical and surgical diagnoses.  Nurses provide care to patients after complex open and minimally invasive thoracic surgeries of the lung and esophagus.  Medical diagnoses include end-stage renal disease, end-stage liver failure, chest pain, cardiac arrhythmias, sepsis, CHF, COPD, and GI bleeds.  All beds are equipped to provide continuous cardiac and pulse oximetry monitoring. 

Experience, Education and Certification:

-          One year of acute, hospital-based nursing experience required

-          Two years of hospital-based cardiac telemetry nursing experience preferred, but  willing to train

-          Intermediate Care or Step Down Units preferred

-          Experience with chest tubes, cardiac rhythm interpretation, anti-arrhythmic drips, and insulin drips is an asset

-          BSN preferred

-          PCCN certification preferred

Schedule:

-          Six week schedules; Self-scheduling

-          PRN Requirements

GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with the District of Columbia Nurse Practice Act and all other applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards. EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse; current Basic Life Support (BLS). EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria. SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to set priorities and work under stress.
