MedStar Georgetown is currently seeking experienced nurses for our PACU Training Course. This program includes the following elements:

§  Personalized orientation schedule, one-on-one preceptorship (with primary and secondary preceptor)

§  Review of applicable components of Essentials of Critical Care Orientation (developed by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses) -- may be included based on your unique experience and skill needs

§  PACU Specialty Classes and Competency-based Orientation (derived from ASPAN Standards)

§  Shadow days offered in all Perioperative areas, including OR and Surgery Center

§  Reimbursed American Heart Association certifications offered, as needed (BLS, ACLS, PALS)

In order to qualify for a position in the PACU Training Course, you must have:

§  A minimum of two years of hospital-based, in-patient acute care nursing experience

§  Internal MGUH applicants must have worked their current department for at least one year, exclusive of unit-based orientation

All candidates hired for the PACU Training Course for Critical Care Nurses will be required to commit to one year of full-time employment in the PACU, following completion of Training Course.

-          Day shifts with staggered start times from 7:00am-11:30am

-          Minimal call and off shift requirements; Maximum  of 12 hours per call shift

The Post Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) is a 16-bay Recovery Room that provides immediate postoperative care to surgical patients in accordance with ASPAN standards. PACU Nurses care for both adult and pediatric patients who have undergone a broad range of surgical procedures. Surgical specialties include ENT, Urological, Vascular, Plastics and Thoracic, with an emphasis on Neurosurgery, Orthopedics, General Surgery and Transplant.

PACU Nurses work with patients across the continuum of care, from the least acute to the most acute. They assess the needs of the patient and provide appropriate interventions, utilizing critical thinking to practice with a great deal of autonomy.  In addition, the PACU offers flexible, desirable schedules, with minimal off-shifts since the majority of patients are undergoing planned surgical procedures.


GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with the District of Columbia Nurse Practice Act and all other applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. BSN required. EMR experience (Cerner) is an asset.

LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Nurse upon hire; current Basic Life Support (BLS). ACLS and PALS required within 3 months  of hire

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to set priorities and work under stress. Exceptional customer service skills  and commitment to patient safety. Flexibility and willingness to participate in a dynamic,  learning environment. Desire to participate in continuous  performance improvement.
