GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The incumbent in this position is a Registered Nurse who has clinical accountability and administrative responsibility for coordinating the day-to-day patient care services for the inpatient neurosurgical patient population at MMMC, focusing on those patients admitted by the Chief of the MMMC Spine Service. To ensure continuity of care, the Coordinator will advise families and physicians of patient's condition, progress, and impending discharge.  The Coordinator will also facilitate communication with area physicians who wish to refer patients to the spine service at MMMC. In addition, the nurse coordinator will be responsible for educating nursing and other hospital staff regarding spine center and other neurosurgical protocols for admission, discharge and clinical management. These functions will be performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards.

EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. A  Baccalaureate degree in Nursing preferred, and/or equivalent in experience and/or continuing education.

 

LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Current Maryland licensure as a Registered Professional Nurse.

 

EXPERIENCE:  A minimum of five years experience preferred to include: one year of related clinical experience and a minimum of two years progressive leadership experience in an acute care facility.  Experience in a University Teaching Hospital preferred.

 

SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills; expert knowledge of nursing principles, practices and skills; performance improvement principles, expertise in clinical area for which application is made. Demonstrates strong leadership skills and the ability to function independently.
