Medical Intensive Care Unit – C4-2

If you are seeking the excitement and challenge of critical care environment, MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Medical Intensive Care Unit is the place for you! The Medical Intensive Care Unit (MICU) boasts a dynamic, interdisciplinary team that provides holistic and compassionate care to MedStar Georgetown's most complex critically ill medical patients. MICU nurses are clinical experts in the management of complicated medical problems and utilize many advanced therapies, such as continuous renal replacement therapy (CRRT), post cardiac arrest hypothermia protocol and hemodynamic emergencies.

The MICU is the home of MedStar Georgetown's rapid response nurse, known as the "Resource Nurse," who provides critical assessment of decompensating patients throughout the hospital.  Additionally, the MICU team functions as the CODE BLUE responders, managing emergent patient events with expertise and compassion.

As patient and family advocates, MICU nurses are devoted to ethical nursing practice. MICU Nurses provide support and education for patients and family members throughout the entire life spectrum, with a particular focus in end of life treatment.

The nursing leadership team promotes an environment that is supportive of nursing autonomy, and actively supports the personal and professional development of its nurses. Many of the nurses belong to their professional organizations and nearly half have obtained certification in their clinical specialty area. In addition, the MICU has been recognized three times by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN) with the Beacon Award for Nursing Excellence.
