Surgical Intensive Care Unit – C4-3

MedStar Georgetown's 19-bed Surgical Intensive Care Unit (SICU) is staffed by highly dedicated and experienced critical care nurses and intensivists, complemented by skilled respiratory therapists, and other healthcare professionals trained to care for acutely ill surgical patients. Surgical specialties include transplant (liver, kidney, pancreas, and small bowel), thoracic surgery, plastic-reconstructive surgeries, vascular surgery, abdominal and ear, nose and throat surgery. The SICU is equipped to provide patients with state-of-the-art therapies at the bedside (continuous renal replacement), advanced hemodynamic monitoring, complex mechanical ventilation modes and medication infusions. The synergy between our professional expertise and our patient care model allows for clinical outcomes and results which are among the best in the nation. Unit leadership supports participation in shared governance, research, continuing education as well as national specialty certification. The SICU is the proud recipient of the AACN Beacon Award for excellence in critical care.


-          Required: One year of hospital-based critical care (ICU) nursing experience

Education and Certification:

-          BSN Preferred. Will consider candidates enrolled in a BSN program

-          Certification preferred


-          12-hour shifts

-          Self-scheduling, 6-week schedules

-          Full-time Night Shift or Rotating Shifts

Built-in incentives for years of serviceGENERAL DESCRIPTION: The incumbent in this position is responsible for providing competent professional nursing care using the nursing process. These functions are performed in accordance with the District of Columbia Nurse Practice Act and all other applicable laws and regulations and Georgetown University Hospital's philosophy, policies, procedures and standards. EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. LICENSURE AND OR CERTIFICATION: Current D.C. license as a Registered Professional Nurse; current Basic Life Support (BLS). EXPERIENCE: To meet unit criteria. SPECIAL KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES: Ability to perform the nursing technologies.  Effective verbal and written communication skills.  Ability to set priorities and work under stress.
