GENERAL DESCRIPTION: The incumbent in this position is a Department Leader who assumes 24 hour administrative authority and responsibility for the management and direction of the operational, personnel and financial activities of a specified unit or procedural area. These functions are coordinated with the Executive Staff, Hospital Leadership, Medical Staff and others and are performed in accordance with all applicable laws and regulations and Medstar Georgetown University Hospital's mission, vision and core values.

Presurgical Testing Department

MedStar Georgetown University Hospital's Pre Surgical Testing Department provides care for patients to ensure that all necessary medical information is obtained and preoperative requirements are completed prior to the day of surgery.  The Pre-surgical Testing Department supports our 23 Operating Rooms that deliver inpatient and outpatient treatment along the following service lines:  orthopedics, neurosurgery, limb salvage, gynecological surgery, otolaryngology, robotics, urology, pediatrics, thoracic, and general surgery.  Our highest priority is patient safety and providing exceptional patient care every day to every patient.

As a Pre-Surgical Testing nurse, you will assess patients to determine if they need an appointment for specialized evaluations, preoperative blood tests and/or diagnostic testing. Pre-Surgical Testing care is provided either during a clinic appointment or via a screening phone call, and in some cases, both.  Nurses are primarily assigned to one area per shift.

-          Pre-Surgical Testing Clinic: The nurse is responsible for assessing the patient and obtaining pertinent health data in coordination with anesthesia providers. The goal is to effectively identify anesthesia risk in advance of surgery; thereby minimizing day of surgery cancellations while optimizing the patient for the surgical experience.  Additionally, the RN provides emotional support and extensive patient education to prepare the patient and assist in setting realistic post-operative expectations.

-          Pre-Surgical Testing Phone Bank: The nurse is responsible for the same duties as listed above, but the care is provided primarily over the phone.  We begin calling patients 14 days prior to surgery to ensure all necessary health data is collected and reviewed 24-48 hours prior to surgery.

The Pre-Surgical Testing Department values nursing education and professional development.  As a result, newly hired nurses are provided a comprehensive orientation, designed by a Clinical Educator and tailored to the nurses' skills and experience.  Additionally, the Clinical Educator coordinates ongoing educational programs designed to meet the unique needs of all Pre-Surgical Testing associates, including nurses, nurse residents, clinical technicians, patient care associates and suite attendants.

EDUCATION AND OR TRAINING REQUIRED: Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing. Bachelor's degree or higher in Nursing required. A  Master's degree in Nursing preferred, and/or equivalent in experience and/or continuing education. Professional Certification in Nursing Administration preferred.

EXPERIENCE:  A minimum of four years experience preferred to include: one year of related clinical experience and a minimum of two years progressive supervisory/management experience in an acute care facility.  Experience in a University Teaching Hospital preferred.
